Steel, sheep hair, vintage wolf trap
24” x 22” x 20”
The soft dark interior of the sculpture beckons entry, but beware - there is a wolf trap hiding inside!
The exterior of this sculpture, originally inspired by the Fibonacci-sequential layers of a hollowed-out pine cone, is made of woven barbed wire, serving as a harsh reminder of the cruel fencing that has reduced the vast spaces of the American West into small sections, simultaneously keeping out Native peoples and indigenous wildlife that had previously roamed the lands freely for millennia. The interior, soft and dark with vaginal references, is lined with Black Welsh and brown Navajo Churro sheep hair, representing the imported species that were constrained within these barbed enclosures. An obscured hanging wolf trap inside reminds of hideous political campaigns designed to exterminate animals vital to the ecosystem, and also reminds of the predatory sexual abuse of women, particularly women of color.
